Todd was paralyzed following a car accident on December 18, 1987, driving home from his high school prom. Paralysis is condition caused by an impairment of the motor and/or sensory function of the lower limbs, caused by trauma, infection or congenital reasons. Traumatic reasons for paraplegia can include an acute spinal cord injury, spinal cord compression or vertebral fractures. Spinal cord dysfunction can be either complete or incomplete.
According to Teammate Jean Labonté
“Todd Nicholson, just like Steve Yzerman, has been a great leader for many years. But the comparison does not stop there. On the ice he also brings a wealth of experience, tremendous vision and also great poise. And on top of it all, Todd will go to battle every game, on every shift, healthy or injured. He's a warrior.”
